Urban e-mobility that’s hard to define
It is an e-bicycle, is it an e-moto? Actually, it’s neither. The Biktrix Moto describes itself as a moped, technically an e-moped. Designed with urban cruising and commuting in mind, the bike apes the look of balloon-tyre beach cruisers, combined with shades of a Schwinn Stingray in 2 fifty9’s humble opinion. The high bars and relatively low saddle height mean, it isn’t thinking about you pedalling it far or with much leg power. Th large 750w 85Nm battery powers rear-hub mounted Bafang motor that is fitted into a tubular steel frame. Power is accessed via the ‘twist and go’ throttle in three assist modes. There’s an option for two batteries to be fitted simultaneously, to double the 50mile range, if you feel the need. Yes, there are pedals, yes you can pedal (or pedal assist the motor) if you want, but this is a throttle accessed e-moped, not a pedal assist e-bicycle. Class 2 limiters on the motor cap its speed at 20ph, though it can be overridden in an ‘off-road only’ mode, for a top speed of 28mph, which is getting there (though makes the bike subject to other regulations). Available in 20 (70lbs without battery) or 24in wheel versions (74lbs without battery). Batteries weight a further 11lbs each. So don’t expect to carry this up to the loft apartment. That said, it’s a moped, you wouldn’t take a petrol driven moped upstairs and indoors either. We think bikes like this Biktrix MOTO could be what some reluctant pedallers are looking for in their e-mobility future. Will it be your way to move around in summer 2021?
