In another boon for Boulder, Colorado, Garmin has announced that it has acquired Boulder-based TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic softwares, providing customizable coaching programs for endurance athletes (TrainingPeaks), and a system for athletes and strength-training coaches (TrainHeroic).
The news was announced in a press release on July 22.
“TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic share Garmin’s passion for empowering athletes and coaches around the world with world-class training tools, performance metrics and actionable insights. The addition of these highly successful platforms to the Garmin ecosystem will expand access to more authentic coaching experiences—connecting athletes with professional coaches who guide, motivate and inspire them to reach their goals.”
–Brad Trenkle, Garmin Co-Chief Operating Officer
“We’re thrilled to join forces with Garmin to advance our shared mission of empowering coaches and athletes with science-based training. For over a decade, we’ve worked together to democratize coaching and performance insights, helping millions of athletes reach their peak through data-driven, structured training.”
–Andy Stephens, CEO of Peaksware Holdings, parent company of TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic
Garmin apparently did not acquire TrainPressRelease, the software that automatically deletes the word “thrilled” from all announcement copy. Maybe Microsoft Clippy can fill in. FTR, TrainPressRelease does not exist, but interestingly, the company, Peaksware, does offer training software for music.
Back to the point. With Strava bulking up on AI and pushing Runna, its run coaching app, the acquisition makes a lot of sense. Tying its hardware ecosystem to a well-established coaching program can certainly add value across the board, and likely give consumers greater confidence that hardware purchases give them what they need today and as they progress.
There’s a lot more to come here, and I’m sure the Strava folks are anxiously seeing what hardware they can tie into. Wahoo?
