Outdoor Brand to Provide Binoculars for 415 STEM Activity Kits for the Bird Scouts Program
Nocs Provisions, maker of adventure-ready binoculars and accessories, today announces a new partnership with Science Action Club, a youth initiative from the world-class science museum and research institution the California Academy of Sciences.
Science Action Club is a global science and nature program designed for middle school youth. The program provides educational partners in more than 475 communities across the United States and Europe with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activity plans, training for staff, and STEM education and project kits. As part of the partnership, Nocs Provisions is donating more than $33,000 of binoculars to be included in Science Action Club’s Bird Scouts kits.
“Since day one Nocs has been about fostering exploration, curiosity, and learning, as well as doing whatever we can as a brand and a team to help get more people outside,” said Chris McKleroy, CEO and founder of Nocs. “The Academy’s Science Action Club initiative is really impressive, and we truly hope that our donation helps get kids even more excited about the outdoors, birding and science.”
Nocs’ 8x25 Standard Issue Waterproof Binocular, a flagship product for the brand, will be incorporated into Science Action Club’s Bird Scouts program. Bird Scouts participants identify local species and investigate environmental changes that potentially impact bird behavior and submit their findings to eBird – a project from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The findings in this program are helping scientists track changes in bird populations across the globe.
“Science Action Club is all about connecting youth to nature, nurturing curiosity, and sparking a lifelong appreciation of science. For young people to build their own STEM identities, it’s pivotal not only to have access to top-notch scientific tools, but to see the real world impact of the community science they are engaging in,” said Olivia VanDamme, Education Program Coordinator, California Academy of Sciences. “I could immediately see a strong synergy between the Nocs mission and ours. Elevating underrepresented voices in the outdoors, and supporting causes that inspire young people parallels our own mission. We are so grateful for Nocs’ generous donation of binoculars that will reach Science Action Club youth across the country.”
“With the addition of Nocs binoculars to our Bird Scout kits, participants are getting access to the kind of high-quality equipment used by ornithologists. Not only are they joining a global community of birders, but they are developing a lifelong practice of environmental observation, and feeding data and observations to professional researchers who are making important discoveries about our natural world,” said Rachael Van Schoik, Science Action Club Program Manager, California Academy of Sciences.
